Aids Foundation Houston Receives Governor’s 2014 Criminal Justice Volunteer Award
(Austin) – During ceremonies in Austin today, Kelly Young of Houston accepted the Governor’s 2014 Criminal Justice Volunteer “Health Services” Award on behalf of AIDS Foundation Houston. For over a decade, AIDS Foundation Houston has displayed a cordial gift of generosity to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice that goes beyond measure.
The award was presented by Oliver Bell, Chairman of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice, and TDCJ Executive Director Brad Livingston.
“These men and women give their time not for monetary reward,” said Livingston. “They volunteer because they have a personal passion in seeing others succeed. We are grateful for their selfless dedication.”
AIDS Foundation Houston’s reach extends beyond the walls of the TDCJ to ex-offenders and men and women who are homeless, hungry and those with chronic illnesses.
The offender peer-led programs focus on increasing knowledge of HIV/AIDS and chronic illnesses, as well as the importance of personal health that directly affects the offender population. AIDS Foundation Houston conducts six Wall Talk peer education conferences annually and invites the best medical professionals to teach offender participants about the latest illness prevention information. There are currently 100 units participating in their programs such as Wall Talk, Women to Women, Safe Prisons and Somebody Cares.
AIDS Foundation Houston has displayed support of multiple divisions within the TDCJ and it is because of their continued support to the agency and their life-saving efforts that they were selected to receive the Health Services volunteer award.
AIDS Foundation Houston is one of 6 organizations and 15 individuals from across the state recognized today for their efforts to help inmates and those who are on parole or probation.
