Edna Walker has a heart for helping offender families. She has been serving at the Telford Unit in New Boston, Texas, since 1997, managing both the family visitors’ center, which provides a comfortable environment as families wait to make their visit, and the Samaritan House, a four unit housing facility that provides offenders’ families a safe place to overnight when they travel long distances to visit their loved ones. Ms. Walker has recruited other volunteers to assist with operating the visitors’ center, which receives approximately 200 visits each weekend, and she makes sure the visitor’s center is kept in pristine condition. Her service does not stop there. She is also very involved with the successful Day with Dad program that helps offenders reconnect with their children and rebuild those relationships. In addition, she is involved with other projects to include providing flowers for all mothers that visit their sons on Mother’s Day and candy for 2,800 offenders at Christmas. For her committed and heartfelt concern for others, Edna Walker is well-deserving of the volunteer award for Religious Service.
