David Rust, Correctional Institutions Division

2010 Governor's Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Award

David Rust has been a volunteer since 1994 serving at the Lewis Unit in Woodville, Texas. He volunteers four to six days each week, coordinating the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)/Narcotics Anonymous (NA) program and leading worship services.

He has served as a certified volunteer chaplain's assistant since 1996, assisting with thousands of offender family death notices and other critical notifications in a manner that is consistently professional and pastoral. Mr. Rust also serves his community by assisting the poor through the Caring is Sharing program and by leading an AA group in Tyler County. He also volunteers at the Heritage Village, a living museum of pioneer history, demonstrating frontier rout-a-bout duties; gives talks on several subjects including his experience with the Flying Tigers while in China; and writes an article each week for the Tyler County Booster.

Because he has given so much of himself, and because he includes TDCJ among those he serves, David Rust has been selected to receive the Correctional Institutions Division volunteer award.
