Legislative update for TDCJ employees from the executive director
Among the many important issues acted upon by the 83rd Texas Legislature, the most significant for the Department involved appropriations for agency operations and employee pay raises, enactment of the TDCJ Sunset legislation and changes to the pension program serving state employees.

Legislature maintains existing retirement benefits for current employees
In order to enhance the long term viability of the pension program serving state employees, the 83rd Texas Legislature has adopted several measures intended to decrease the unfunded liability of the Employees Retirement System's (ERS) retirement trust funds. CID Director Thaler retires, Stephens selected as new director
In May, 33-year veteran of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Rick Thaler retired from his position as director of the agency's Correctional Institutions Division.

ERS Annual Enrollment dates for Plan Year 2014 scheduled for
July 15-28
This year's Annual Enrollment for TDCJ employees begins July 15 and ends July 28. During this period, agency staff may change their work benefits for Plan Year 2014 by signing into their online account on the Employees Retirement System (ERS) website, contacting their benefits coordinator or calling ERS directly.

The agency's firearms storage policy as outlined in Administrative Directive (AD) 02.95 is being revised, but the new procedures are effective immediately.

Fallen officers honored at 14th Annual Memorial Service
On May 10 the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) held the 14th Annual Fallen Officers' Memorial Service at the HEARTS Veterans' Museum in Huntsville to honor those individuals who lost their lives in the line of duty. This service and similar events held throughout the state served as reminders to reflect and honor the sacrifice of our fallen colleagues.
