Peer Recovery Support Services
To encourage offenders to follow a path that will bring many recovery minded individuals to the forefront of supporting others in recovery by providing peer recovery support services.
The focus of the program is to develop qualified Peer Recovery Support Specialists to work within the correctional and community substance abuse treatment setting.
Select offenders who are on a treatment facility, who meet specific qualifications, may attend a Peer Recovery Support Services class (20 hrs). The class focuses on recovery issues and how they can help others in recovery utilizing their own experiential knowledge.
Upon release, the offender can take an additional 26 hours of training offered by TDCJ at no cost to those offenders who attended the training while in prison (Travel and Lodging is the responsibility of the person attending).
When the offenders has completed the 46 hour training, they may apply for a Peer Recovery Support Specialist certification through the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals
After an offender obtains their certification, they may come back to the criminal justice setting as a volunteer or be qualified to work as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist in a community based program.
