Texas Department of Criminal Justice
State law requires the collection of blood or other specimens from offenders for the purpose of creating a forensic record based on deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Each DNA specimen collection is preserved, recorded, and sent to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) for scientific analysis and maintenance in the DNA database. Although an offender may not be held past a non-discretionary mandatory supervision or discharge date, the law provides for the use of administrative action and/or force against an offender who fails or refuses to comply.
