Role of Their Family

A mentor is a friend;
Not a foster parent.

You need to explore your mentee’s relationship with family.

Parents: Are they living? Do they visit? How are they able to help?

Siblings: Are they estranged? Would they help?

Spouse: What is the relationship between the mentee and the other parent of their children? How do they plan to reconcile with or contact these persons?

Children: Do they communicate with them? Do they owe child support?

The answers to these questions will lead you to other questions and help you guide them to solutions to challenges they will face immediately upon release.

TDCJ policy allows mentors to contact the family of mentees before release for the sole purpose of preparing them for release. You cannot relay messages or provide gifts to mentees or their family.
