Assessing Risks and Needs

Community supervision officers assess an offender's level of risk by using the Texas Case Classification and Risk Assessment tool.

The tool ranks an offender's level of risk and need as:

  • High - for offenders who have high risk and needs scores or have documented special needs
  • Medium - for offenders who have medium risk and needs scores, have difficulty conforming to the rules of less-intense supervision or who have successfully completed more-intense supervision
  • Low - for offenders who have low risk and needs scores, or who are on community supervision but have not yet been classified, or who have successfully completed more-intense supervision
