Offender Transportation

It is the Mission of Offender Transportation to provide a safe and secure transport of all offenders while meeting the agreed upon requirements of our customers.

Department Overview

The Offender Transportation Department is responsible for offender transfers to include:

Unit-to-Unit Transfers
Medical Appointments/Transfers
County Jail Intake
State and Federal Court Appearances
Off-site Medical Offender Tracking
Out-of-State Extradition’s
Emergencies (i.e. disturbances, disasters, and any other similar emergency)
Hospital Security
Off-Site Medical Tracking

The Offender Transportation Department is headquartered at the Byrd Unit in Huntsville. There are five regional satellite offices located across the state in Amarillo, Abilene, Tennessee Colony, Huntsville, Rosharon, and Beeville. This department is responsible for operating a fleet of vehicles consisting of 117 buses, 62 vans, six handicapped-accessible vans and one car.

More than 4.5 million miles were traveled and 503,462 offenders were transported in FY09. This department works closely with Classification and Records to ensure timely, efficient, and safe offender transports.
