TDCJ facilities weather season’s first Atlantic hurricane without incident

Facilities housing TDCJ offenders in the Rio Grande Valley weathered the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2010 season without incident.

Hurricane Alex made landfall south of Brownsville on June 30 with wind speeds of 100 miles per hour but had no damaging effect on prison and state jail facilities located to the north in Edinburg and Raymondville. None of the 3,300 offenders housed at TDCJ’s Segovia/Lopez complex in Edinburg and the privately-operated Willacy County State Jail in Raymondville were evacuated ahead of the Category 2 storm’s landfall. Generators at the three units were topped off with fuel, however, and extra diesel was brought in as a backup. Weather conditions did not require the evacuation of high-risk parolees from the area, although two TDCJ buses and a van had been readied in McAllen and Harlingen in the event they might be needed.

CJAD offered assistance to community supervision corrections departments in the path of the hurricane, providing updates on the path and intensity of the storm, confirming evacuation plans with community corrections facilities and coordinating the activation of a hotline for potential evacuations.

Employee of the Year Award

Angela Folsie receiving certificate from Allan Polunsky

CO V Angela Foisie was honored with the 8th Annual Polunsky Unit Employee of the Year Award in June. The Livingston Unit’s namesake, former Texas Board of Criminal Justice Allan B. Polunsky of San Antonio, was on hand to present Foisie with the award along with two domestic round trip airline tickets and $500 in cash. Foisie has worked her entire 10-year TDCJ career at Polunsky, where she is now assigned to the armory where she repairs Use of Force equipment and provides key control and other services. She also assists with the unit’s training academy and actively recruits potential employees for the facility.
