James Jones named NAAWS
Warden of the Year

On August 8, the North American Association of Wardens and Superintendents recognized Warden James Jones of the Huntsville Unit as their Warden of the Year at an event held in Boston, Massachusetts. The annual award, first presented in 1979, recognizes wardens who meet the highest standards of excellence in the criminal justice profession.

The NAAWS comprises more than 1,100 wardens, superintendents, and jail administrators who work in, or have retired from, state, local or federal jurisdictions. Their Warden of the Year recognition honors wardens who demonstrate exceptional problem-solving abilities, who are involved in their community and who serve as a mentor to others.

Warden Jones started his TDCJ career in 1984 as a correctional officer at the Ellis Unit in Huntsville. He advanced through the security ranks at many facilities, eventually becoming warden at the Goodman Transfer Facility in 2005. He is currently a senior warden of the Huntsville Unit, where he manages approximately 430 employees and supervises nearly 1,700 male offenders. Jones has an associate’s degree in Education and Criminal Justice from Navarro College.

TDCJ’s Correctional Institutions Division Director Lorie Davis supported the NAAWS' decision to honor Warden Jones, saying, "Warden Jones works diligently to help the agency achieve its mission. During his time with the agency, he has earned the respect of subordinates, peers and supervisors, and those who know him understand they can always look to him for guidance. I commend the NAAWS on their decision to recognize his professional excellence."

Executive Director Bryan Collier added, "Warden Jones is one of many outstanding wardens serving the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and he is worthy of the honor he has received from the North American Association of Wardens and Superintendents. I am very pleased to see him receive this well-deserved recognition."

Speaking of the recognition Jones commented, "It was an honor to receive this award and represent TDCJ at the banquet. I thank NAAWS for acknowledging the work we do in Texas. I emphasize the word 'we' because I attribute my success to the great staff I work for and those who work around me."

This is the first year NAAWS has honored two wardens; Warden Alan Lazaroff of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections was also recognized.
