Legislation Relating to Retirement Benefits

Legislation being considered by the 83rd Texas Legislature could impact the retirement benefits of current state employees. Click on the link below for an updated summary of the changes contemplated by SB 1459. Note that on May 13, 2013, the Texas Senate amended SB 1459 so that retirement compensation benefits for current state employees would not change. In regards to the state's contribution for retiree health insurance, only employees who have less than five years of service as of September 1, 2014 would be impacted. The bill as amended would also increase the contributions paid by all employees for retirement in order to maintain existing benefits.

Senate Bill 1459 will now be forwarded to the House for consideration.

Note the summary reflect changes being considered at this stage in the legislative process and is therefore subject to change as discussions regarding this important issue continue.
