2009 Governor's Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Awards
*Bob K., Substance Abuse Treatment Program
Over this past year, Bob has worked with more than 400 offenders spreading the message of hope and recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous. The offenders he works with have been amazed by his leadership and by his commitment to them. Bob chaired the Corrections Facilities Committee whose mission is to carry the message of recovery to the alcoholic who still suffers; especially those that are behind the walls. He also chaired The Houston Roundup, which is an event to bring together those in recovery and raise money for publications such as the Big Book and 12 and 12. This past year the committee raised $5,000, making it possible for hundreds of offenders to have access to these publications. In his home club, a separate fund was established specifically to help with materials for offenders. Again, due to his leadership and commitment, the club was able to raise more funds necessary than requests received. For his dedication and perseverance, Bob has been selected as the recipient for the Substance Abuse Treatment Program award.
