2008 Governor's Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Award

Freedom Ministries, Female Offender Program - "Susan Cranford" Award

2008 Governor's Criminal Justice Volunteer Service AwardFreedom Ministries has been selected to receive the "Susan Cranford" Volunteer Award for female offender programs. This longstanding volunteer group provided the first Sunday Worship service at the Carole Young Medical Facility in March 1996. In addition to the regular weekly worship services, Freedom Ministries provides substance abuse programs; family and parenting classes and other programs relevant to female offenders. These programs help the female offenders evaluate their lives, overcome past mistakes and make necessary changes, as well as learn how to think differently and make quality decisions. The offenders are provided with the life skills to help keep them from returning to prison. The volunteers come from a variety of ethnic groups, experience and age. One of the oldest volunteers is now 87 years old and remains very active. Freedom Ministries is an excellent choice for this very prestigious award.
